Corn brings production together

The modern American farm often has fewer points of diversification than farms of just a few years ago. Still, there are plenty of those producers who call themselves grain farmers who raise a large number of livestock and those who call themselves livestock producers who raise a lot of grain.

Bart Beattie, a Dawson County, Neb. producer is one of those very diverse producers who maybe a throwback to producers who do a lot of things and do them well.

On his home place west of Sumner, Beattie, 33, grows corn, soybeans and alfalfa. He has a 2,000 head farrow-to-finish hog venture that also supplies pigs to contract hog growers. Beattie also has an Angus-Simmental cow-calf operation.

No-till conference draws over 1,400

"Myth vs. Reality" was the theme of the recent No-Till on the Plains conference, held at Salina, Kan.

More than 1,400 people jammed into the Bicentennial Center for two days of speakers aimed not only at breaking myths about no-till agriculture, but creating new realities about people and rural America.

The keynote speaker, Al Davis, Johnson County, Kan., 4-H and youth development Extension agent, rocked the house by speaking without being seen for the first two-thirds of his speech.

Windy? Kansas?
"We have room for claiming Dodge City, Kan., is the windiest city in the United States. The newest analyses put Dodge's historical annual average wind speed at 13.9 miles per hour," said Mary Knapp, state climatologist, based with Kansas State University Research and Extension. Chicago, the self-proclaimed Windy City, is 74th with an average 10.3 miles per hour.
Wind is not the end of the world?
Exploring in 1830, Isaac McCoy wrote an early record of a blinding Kansas wind storm, blackened with the soot and dust of a prairie fire. "Still, most Americans weren't really paying much attention to the state's winds until May 1934--two years after the start of the worst round of drought-driven dust storms since the 1890s," Knapp said. The storm originated in Montana and Wyoming, but East Coast papers called it 'Kansas dirt.'"

Valentine's flower care?
For arrangements, keep the vase filled or floral foam soaked with warm water, adding fresh, warm water daily. As with roses, recut stems under water with a sharp knife and place the flowers in the vase solution you've prepared. Prune older trees first as the older, larger wood will tolerates lower temperatures than young trees with small diameter wood.
